Today's Battle

Not by me this time. Not yet. Our time may come, as it did in 2003. But today, the 40 degree temperatures we've had every day for a week are now only 29, the sky is overcast, and we've had a sprinkling of rain.

When driving, we scan the horizon for signs of smoke. We keep the radio on, so we get the emergency warnings as soon as possible. We take what precautions we can, and we go about our daily business.

It looks very much like the final death toll will exceed 200. Too many in the burnout zone are still officially missing, and despite the best efforts of the medics, some of those in hospital will succumb to multiple organ failure in the coming month.

Then there's Heroes and Heroines like this.

Glad you are safe. I can only imagine how stressful this situation must be. And so many seem to have died horribly, trying to escape the inferno.
